I’ve bought NBA 2K every year since 2K14 and I regret maybe half of those purchases. That sounds like a bit but honestly it might be more. The thing about 2K is the core basketball is genuinely incredible. Best in any video game, probably ever. But everything around it — the VC, the cringe storylines, the recycled commentary, the fact that it’s basically the same game with a roster update — makes me feel like a sucker every September.<\/p>\n

I keep buying it anyway. We all do. That’s the problem.<\/p>\n

The Gameplay Is the Hook<\/h2>\n

Let me just say it: when you’re in a close game, fourth quarter, down two, you call a timeout, run a pick and roll, your shooter comes off the screen, you time the release perfectly, green light, splash — nothing in gaming feels better. The shot meter mechanics change every single year and I complain about it every single year, but when you nail that perfect release animation and the ball goes through the net clean, it’s pure serotonin.<\/p>\n

Then you miss a wide open three with a 90-rated shooter and question everything. That’s 2K baby. Beautiful and cruel in equal measure.<\/p>\n

Defense is actually satisfying which is rare for sports games. Getting a chase-down block or baiting someone into a steal and pushing the fast break the other way feels amazing. The problem is your AI teammates who refuse to rotate and leave shooters wide open. I’ve screamed at my screen so many times watching my center stand in the paint doing absolutely nothing while their PG drains a corner three. Thanks buddy. Real helpful.<\/p>\n

\"NBA<\/figure>\n

MyCAREER: Great Idea, Terrible Execution<\/h2>\n

The concept of creating your own player and taking them from nobody to NBA superstar is brilliant. Has been since they introduced it. The problem is 2K insists on wrapping it in these godawful cinematic storylines with B-list actors and dialogue that makes me physically cringe. I’m a 6’3″ point guard who just wants to hoop, I don’t need a subplot about my rivalry with some NPC or a villainous agent. Just let me play basketball.<\/p>\n

The actual grind though is real and that’s by design. Without spending real money on VC, upgrading your player takes forever. I spent an embarrassing number of hours grinding my three-point rating from 70 to 85 and when I finally got there I felt relief more than excitement. Like finishing a homework assignment. That’s not how a game should make you feel.<\/p>\n

The City (formerly The Neighborhood) is the open world hub and it’s… a mall. With basketball courts. You walk around, wait through loading screens to enter a store, buy virtual sneakers with VC you could’ve spent on actual upgrades, and realize you’ve been playing dress-up for 45 minutes instead of getting better at the game. I once waited four minutes to load into a barber shop. Four minutes. To change a haircut. On a digital character.<\/p>\n

\"MyCAREER<\/figure>\n

MyTEAM: The Money Pit<\/h2>\n

Okay so this is the mode that really exposes 2K’s predatory side. It’s essentially FIFA Ultimate Team but basketball. You open packs, get player cards, build a team. Simple concept, fun in theory.<\/p>\n

In practice, people who spend $200 on VC have Galaxy Opal cards and destroy people like me who refuse to spend real money and are out here with Ruby and Sapphire players. It’s not competitive at all, it’s just a wallet comparison. I did pull a Pink Diamond Kevin Durant once though and I genuinely screamed loud enough that my roommate came in asking what happened. That one pull almost justified the hours of grinding. Almost.<\/p>\n

The pack odds are insulting. 2K publishes them now after the lawsuits and when you see something like “0.01% chance for Galaxy Opal” it really puts into perspective how much of a scam it is. But gambling addiction is real and that flicker of hope when you buy a pack is incredibly hard to resist. They know exactly what they’re doing.<\/p>\n

\"MyTEAM<\/figure>\n

MyGM\/MyLeague: Actually the Best Modes<\/h2>\n

Nobody talks about these enough but franchise mode is where I spend most of my time. You run a team as GM — trades, drafts, salary cap management, the whole thing. MyGM has a story component that’s skippable, MyLeague is pure sandbox. I’ve done 15-year sim runs where I traded for every young star, built a dynasty, won six championships, and felt like a genius.<\/p>\n

I also tried to trade a 75-overall bench player for Giannis once and the AI accepted. I felt so guilty I reloaded my save. Not because it was unfair to the AI. Because it felt like cheating at a single player game. That’s where I’m at mentally.<\/p>\n

The custom league options are deep. You can create teams, import draft classes, change rules. If you’ve ever wanted to put the 96 Bulls against the 2017 Warriors, you can do that. I have. Multiple times. The 96 Bulls win more often than you’d think.<\/p>\n

The Legends Are What Keep Me Coming Back<\/h2>\n

Playing with Jordan, Kobe, LeBron, Magic, Bird — this never gets old. It just doesn’t. Kobe’s fadeaway in this game is so perfectly replicated that it makes me emotional sometimes. I grew up watching him play and having that move at my fingertips in a video game is a tribute that 2K genuinely got right.<\/p>\n

Jordan is unstoppable if you know how to use him. His mid-range is unfair. I’ve had friends rage-quit when I picked the Bulls in Play Now because they know what’s coming. Magic’s passing is from another dimension — I got a triple-double with him once in MyTEAM and my roommate had to physically take the controller from me because I wouldn’t stop talking about it.<\/p>\n

The 2K21 Kobe tribute edition hit different. The cover art, the Mamba Forever package, the tribute content. I cried during the tribute video. Then I immediately got annoyed at the shot meter. The full 2K emotional experience in ten minutes.<\/p>\n

\"Legend<\/figure>\n

Online: Where Fun Goes to Die<\/h2>\n

Park and Rec (3v3 streetball) is fun with friends and miserable with randoms. You queue up, get matched against a squad of three guys who have clearly been playing together for months with perfect builds and chemistry, and you get destroyed 21-5. Your teammate shoots 2-for-12 and blames lag. Classic.<\/p>\n

Play Now Online matchmaking is a joke. I have an 85-overall team and regularly get matched against someone running a 96-overall squad. What is the point of a matchmaking system if it doesn’t match you with people at your level. I genuinely don’t understand.<\/p>\n

I entered a community tournament once. Got eliminated first round by someone who clearly plays 2K professionally. Scored 12 points in a 21-point game. Humbling. My friend who watched said it was “hard to watch.” Thanks man. Really needed that.<\/p>\n

The Atmosphere Is Genuinely Incredible<\/h2>\n

I’ll give 2K full credit here: the presentation is best-in-class for any sports game. Every arena looks and sounds right. MSG feels different from the Smoothie King Center. The crowd reactions, the announcers, the jumbotron, the halftime shows — it’s broadcast quality.<\/p>\n

Kevin Harlan and Reggie Miller on commentary is genuinely good. Harlan loses his mind on big plays and it’s infectious. But after 100+ hours you’ve heard every line five hundred times and it gets old. “He can fill it up from downtown!” Yeah Kevin, I know. You’ve said that every time I hit a three for the past three months.<\/p>\n

The in-game presentation during playoff games ramps up beautifully. Different camera angles, more crowd energy, the whole thing. It actually makes playoff games in MyGM feel meaningful. I got chills winning a championship in year three of a MyLeague save. It’s just a video game but my brain didn’t care.<\/p>\n

7\/10, And I Hate That It’s Not Higher<\/h2>\n

The basketball gameplay is genuinely the best in any sports game. The legends are perfectly captured. The atmosphere is incredible. Franchise mode is deep and rewarding. There are moments in 2K that no other game can replicate.<\/p>\n

But I can’t ignore the VC system. It’s predatory, it’s designed to frustrate you into spending money, and it works. The MyCAREER stories are consistently bad. The game is 70% identical to last year’s version. Online matchmaking is broken. Servers still lag in 2026.<\/p>\n

My honest advice: if you love basketball, you’re probably going to buy it anyway. I did. Again. Wait for a sale if you have self-control, which you probably don’t if you’re reading this. Just don’t spend money on VC. Set that boundary now. You’ll thank yourself when your bank statement arrives.<\/p>\n
