I’ve been playing this game on and off for nineteen years. Quit six times. Deleted my characters in a dramatic rage quit twice. Re-subbed three months later every single time because the guild needed a healer. My therapist would have a field day with this.

WoW isn’t just a game for me at this point. It’s like a bad relationship I keep going back to. We fight, we make up, I leave, I miss it, I come crawling back. $15 a month for the privilege. And somehow I keep paying. We all do.

Vanilla Was a Different Time

You know what I remember most about vanilla WoW? Not the epic raids. Not the world PvP. Spending four hours in Stranglethorn Vale looking for a quest item with a garbage drop rate, and when it finally dropped I screamed so loud my roommate came in asking if I was okay. I was not okay. I was very much not okay. But I had my quest item and that was all that mattered.

The game was objectively janky. The quests were “kill 10 boars” and “collect 8 wolf pelts” but half the wolves didn’t drop pelts because RNG is cruel. You ran everywhere for 40 levels until you could afford a mount at 60, and that mount cost 100 gold which might as well have been a million. But there was something about it. The world felt alive. You HAD to group up for stuff. You made friends. You made enemies. You had to interact with people because there was no dungeon finder.

Did it destroy my college GPA? Absolutely. Would I do it again? Already did. Multiple times on private servers.

Alliance or Horde (It Doesn’t Really Matter Anymore)

I play Alliance. Humans. The most boring possible choice. I know this. I’ve accepted it. At least I can see my character’s face without a snout in the way.

The faction thing used to mean something. Like, it MEANT something. You saw a Horde player in contested territory and your heart rate went up. World PvP was organic and intense. Now? The faction conflict is basically over. Cross-faction everything. They killed the identity of both sides and I get why — queue times were brutal — but something was lost. There’s no more “us vs them” feeling when you’re grouping with the enemy in a Mythic+ key.

My friend Derek played Horde since 2005. Orc warrior. He would not shut up about how much better the Horde storyline was. When they announced cross-faction play he sent me a paragraph-long message about how Blizzard ruined the game. I told him to touch grass. We haven’t spoken since. (We’re fine, he’s just dramatic.)

I’ve Played Everything and I’m Still Bad

Thirteen classes now. I’ve leveled most of them past 60 at some point. My main is a Holy Priest because I enjoy the specific anxiety of keeping twenty people alive during a raid boss. Nothing else in gaming gives you that mix of power trip and pure panic. You mess up one GCD, someone dies, and then the entire raid is looking at the healing meters. No pressure.

Tried Warrior tanking once. Lasted one dungeon. The responsibility of keeping aggro on everything while the DPS attacked whatever they wanted gave me actual chest pain. Respect to tank mains. You carry this game and nobody thanks you enough.

Leveled a Demon Hunter. They’re ridiculous. Double jump, glide, eye beams everywhere. It’s the “hold my beer” class and I mean that as a compliment. My friend’s 12-year-old nephew picked DH as his first character and cleared a Mythic+15 on his first try. I’ve been playing for 19 years and barely clear +10s. Skill issue, probably.

Druids are the “I refuse to commit to one role” class and I respect it. Tank in bear form, heal in tree form, DPS in cat form, pretend to be useful in moonkin form. True generalists. Shamans have totems that I still don’t fully understand after all these years.

The Expansions (A Rollercoaster)

Alright here’s my honest ranking because I know you came here for hot takes:

Wrath of the Lich King is the GOAT. Not even close. Arthas as a villain was perfectly built up over Warcraft III and vanilla. Icecrown Citadel was peak raiding. The opening cinematic with “I will not be swayed by the temptations of eternal power” — yeah okay buddy, we all know how that ends. The Lich King fight itself? When he says “I’ll keep you… as a pet” and your entire raid goes silent? I got chills just typing that.

Burning Crusade is second. Outland was alien and beautiful. Illidan. “You are not prepared!” I yelled that at my roommate so many times he threatened to move out. Black Temple was incredible. Everyone rerolled Blood Elf and the Horde outnumbered Alliance 3:1 overnight. Balance? Never heard of her.

Legion was the comeback after the Warlords disaster. Artifact weapons were genuinely cool — your weapon grew with you, had its own talent tree, felt personal. Suramar is still one of the most beautiful zones they’ve ever made. Nighthold raid was visually stunning. Demon Hunters as a new class brought me back after I quit during Warlords.

Speaking of Warlords of Draenor — easily the worst expansion. Garrisons were single-player bases that killed the social aspect of the game. I sat in my garrison, clicked buttons, collected resources, and realized I hadn’t talked to another human player in three days. Unsubbed and didn’t come back until Legion.

Shadowlands gets too much hate IMO. The covenant system was genuinely bad for alts, I’ll give people that. But the zones were beautiful, the raids were solid, and Korthia was… okay Korthia was bad. And “The Jailer” as a villain standing around being menacing for two years without doing anything memorable? Not great. But the Torghast rogue-like dungeon was actually fun.

Dragonflight and The War Within I’ve played less. Dragonflight was a nice return to form. Dragonriding is genuinely the best flying system they’ve ever done and I spent an embarrassing amount of time just soaring around the Dragon Isles doing nothing productive. The War Within added Delves for solo content which is great for people like me who are too anxious for pugs but too antisocial for guild runs.

Mists of Pandaria was secretly good and I will die defending it. Everyone mocked “Kung Fu Panda WoW” and then actually played it and went oh wait this is great. The monk class is fun. The zones are gorgeous. Thunder King was a great raid. The food in Pandaria is a whole crafting system. I spent more time cooking than raiding one week. Priorities.

Raiding Is Friendship and Trauma

There is no experience in gaming quite like progression raiding. You spend four hours on one boss. Wipe thirty times. Argue about positioning. Someone disconnects. Someone has to leave for dinner. Replace them. Re-explain the fight. Wipe again. Everyone’s frustrated. The raid leader is losing their voice. And then — one clean pull. Everything clicks. The boss hits 1%. Your entire Discord screams. You feel like you could conquer the world.

Then next week they nerf the boss and a pug group clears it in 20 minutes and you wonder why you bothered.

My best raiding memory is killing the Lich King in Wrath. The entire guild was on Discord (back when we used Ventrilo actually, dating myself here). We’d been working on him for weeks. When he finally went down, the scream on comms was so loud someone’s dog started barking. My friend spilled coffee on his keyboard. Worth it.

My worst memory is a Mythic+ where the tank pulled extra mobs, blamed me for not healing through 200% increased damage, and I got kicked from the group. I was the healer. THE HEALER. You don’t kick the healer. That group probably disbanded thirty seconds later. They deserved it.

Mythic+ (Competitive Anxiety Simulator)

Timed dungeons. Scaling difficulty. You pull extra packs, you lose time. You wipe, you lose time. The timer runs out, you get nothing. It’s designed to make you stress and somehow that’s why it’s addictive.

I’ve done maybe +15 on a good day. My guildmates are pushing +20s and talking about routes and skips and MDI strats and I just nod and pretend I know what they’re talking about. I don’t. I press my heal buttons and hope for the best. Somehow it works sometimes.

The toxic part is the “require io score” culture in pug groups. You need a good Raider.IO score to get into groups, but you need to get into groups to build your Raider.IO score. Cool system guys. Really well designed. Love being locked out of content because I don’t have a spreadsheet proving I’m good enough to press my buttons in the right order.

PvP (Why Does That Hunter Keep Running Away)

Arena is the most stressful thing in this game and I say that as someone who has done Mythic raiding. 2v2 or 3v3, one mistake and it’s over. Being a Holy Priest in arena means getting trained by two DPS players while your partner yells at you to heal. I am healing. I am doing my best. Maybe peel for me once? No? Okay cool.

Battlegrounds are more casual but somehow more frustrating. Arathi Basin is still the best one. Alterac Valley can last 40 minutes and I’ve had AVs where both teams just zerged mid and nobody capped anything for 20 minutes. Beautiful idiocy.

The Subscription and the Token Problem

$15 a month since 2004. Do the math on that. It hurts. I’ve spent probably $3000+ on WoW subscriptions over the years and that number makes me nauseous.

And now there’s the WoW Token which lets you buy gold with real money. I said I was against it. I complained about it on the forums. Then I bought one last month because I wanted a rare mount and was too lazy to farm gold. I’m part of the problem. I know.

Should You Play WoW in 2026?

8/10. I can’t give it higher because the monetization is gross and the story has been messy since BFA. But the core gameplay loop is still there. Raiding is still great. Mythic+ is still addictive. The world is still beautiful. There’s genuinely nothing else like it in gaming — no other MMO has this much content, this much history, this many things to do.

If you’ve never played, there’s never been a better time to start. The leveling experience is actually good now. Dragonflight and War Within are solid. The free trial lets you play to level 20 which is enough to know if you’re hooked.

If you’re a returning player like me, yeah come back. The game is in a good place right now. Just set a monthly spending limit on yourself because that Token is going to tempt you.

Available on PC.

Nineteen years.
