None of us said anything. Just screenshots of bases, of Pals working in mines, of someone riding a dragon with a rocket launcher. That went on for about three hours before someone finally typed “I haven’t slept.” Palworld hit in January 2024 and just… absorbed everyone I know for a solid month. My buddy Derek — the guy who swore he was “done with early access games forever” after the last one burned him — had 140 hours in two weeks. The game sold 25 million copies on Steam. Insane numbers for an indie studio most people had never heard of.

But here’s the thing nobody talks about enough: Palworld is actually GOOD. Not just “fun for a meme.” Genuinely, “I keep thinking about it at work” good. The “Pokémon with guns” thing got clicks, but the reason people stayed is because Pocketpair accidentally made one of the best survival crafting games in years and happened to wrap it in creature-catching packaging.

I Made Cute Animals Mine Ore and I’m Fine With That

So the core loop is this: you catch creatures called Pals, and you put them to work. Mining, chopping wood, crafting, generating electricity, cooking — everything. Your base runs on cute monster labor. Is it ethical? Absolutely not. The game knows this. The Pals have sanity meters. Work them too hard and they break. You can watch your Lamball — this round fluffy sheep thing — just slump over and stop moving because you’ve been making it mine stone for six hours straight with no food. I felt bad for maybe three seconds and then built another mining station.

The automation is where it gets genuinely addictive. Early game you’re doing everything by hand. Then you get your first few worker Pals and suddenly they’re gathering wood while you’re out exploring. Then you unlock conveyors and automated crafting stations and before you know it you’ve built a full factory assembly line and you’re standing there watching tiny fox monsters process ore into ingots while you check your phone. It’s Factorio but the machines are adorable and also you can ride them.

The Pals: Stolen Designs, Own Personality

Okay I’m not gonna pretend some of these designs aren’t suspicious. There are Pals that look WAY too close to specific Pokémon. The internet noticed within minutes of the trailer dropping. Nintendo noticed too — The Pokémon Company put out a statement about IP protection and there’s been legal stuff happening that I’m not qualified to unpack. Some of the designs are genuinely original and creative, and some of them are… let’s say “heavily inspired.”

But honestly? The Pals have their own personality in how they function. Pengullet is this little ice penguin that you can literally pick up and throw at enemies like a cannonball. There’s no strategic reason to do this in most situations but it’s hilarious every single time. Anubis is an Egyptian god with sunglasses who is the best crafter in the game — if you don’t have an Anubis working your crafting stations, you’re doing it wrong. Jetragon is this massive dragon that’s the ultimate flying mount and catching one feels like an actual achievement. I spent two days trying to catch mine and screamed when the sphere finally clicked.

The type system is fire/water/grass/electric etc. — yes, same as Pokémon, we know. But you’re ALSO shooting an assault rifle while your Fire Pal does elemental damage. The combat is a weird hybrid that shouldn’t work but kind of does. It’s janky as hell. The gunplay feels like it was programmed by someone who’s only seen guns in movies. But there’s something satisfying about dual-wielding pistols while your sheep dog equivalent breathes fire at a giant boss.

Base Building: Where Time Goes to Die

I have a problem with base building games. I’ll start with “just a small shelter” and six hours later I’m on my third redesign, everything has to be symmetrical, and I’ve watched YouTube tutorials about optimal layout spacing. Palworld triggered this in the worst way.

You drop a Palbox and that defines your base area. Within that area you build everything: crafting stations, storage, Pal beds, feed boxes, ranches, generators, defensive turrets. The game lets you have multiple bases and I currently have four. One’s a mining operation. One’s my main crafting hub. One’s a dedicated breeding facility. And one is just… a farm where I grow berries for my Pals because I started feeling guilty about the ones that collapsed from exhaustion. Yes, I know that’s hypocritical. I don’t care.

Base raids are real. If you don’t build walls and assign combat Pals, factions will roll up and wreck your stuff. My first base got absolutely demolished because I was too busy optimizing my ore conveyor belt to think about defense. Lost two hours of progress. Built walls immediately after. Never forgot again.

The Breeding Rabbit Hole

The breeding system in this game is absolutely ridiculous. Like, way more complex than it has any right to be. Every Pal has hidden stats (IVs), passive skills, and specific breeding combinations. The community reverse-engineered the entire breeding tree within days. There are calculators. Spreadsheets. Discord servers dedicated entirely to Pal breeding optimization. I fell into this hole HARD.

I spent an entire Sunday trying to breed a specific Pal with perfect IVs and the right passive traits. An entire Sunday. I looked up and it was 11pm and I was on generation seven of a breeding chain and my girlfriend texted asking if I was okay. I was not okay. I was one generation away from a Legend-tier Anubis with “Swift” and “Work Slave” passives. That’s not a sentence I ever expected to type in my life.

The thing is, a perfectly bred Pal is SO much better than a random catch that once you understand the system, you can’t go back. It’s like going from a rusty knife to a legendary sword. You NEED that optimized Pal.

Combat: Janky But I Keep Coming Back

The combat in Palworld is not good in any traditional sense. The gunplay feels floaty. Enemy attacks sometimes hit you when they visually shouldn’t. The lock-on system has opinions about what it wants to target and those opinions are frequently wrong. I’ve died more times to the camera clipping into a wall during a boss fight than I care to admit.

And yet I’ve put over 200 hours into this game and had a blast in combat. Why? Because the chaos is part of the fun. Fighting a tower boss while your Pal is doing area-of-effect fire damage, you’re dodging around with a shotgun, and your friend accidentally hits you with a rocket launcher — it’s the specific kind of “everything is going wrong” fun that makes multiplayer games memorable. Alpha Pal hunts are genuinely exciting, especially the high-level ones where you need actual strategy and good Pals to survive.

My Honest Score

7.5 out of 10. And I know that’s lower than what a lot of people would give it. But here’s my reasoning: the game is genuinely fun in the moment but it’s also janky, the endgame content is thin, the story is basically nonexistent, the Pokémon design thing is uncomfortable even if you separate the gameplay, and I’m not confident Pocketpair can sustain the momentum. Updates have been slow since the initial explosion of popularity. My friend group all burned out around 80-100 hours and I don’t think any of us have gone back.

But those 80-100 hours were GREAT. The base building loop, the automation, the breeding — it all clicks in a way that’s hard to put down. It’s the kind of game where you don’t realize how much time has passed until someone physically intervenes. If that sounds appealing, grab it. It’s on Game Pass so there’s really no excuse not to try it. Just don’t expect depth where there isn’t any, and don’t expect the jank to get fixed. It’s part of the charm at this point.

Available on PC (Steam), Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Game Pass.

My friend group chat on release day was just screenshots.
