I pre-ordered this. Day one. Premium edition. I literally gave EA my money BEFORE the reviews dropped like an idiot. Then I played the beta and felt that cold sinking feeling in my stomach. Then launch happened and… yeah. We all know what happened at launch. It was bad. Like, “refund my premium edition” bad. I didn’t refund it because I’m stubborn and kept thinking “they’ll fix it, they have to fix it.” Spoiler: they did eventually fix it. Took two years though. Two YEARS.

So this review is weird for me because I’ve lived through the entire BF2042 saga — the hype, the disaster, the rebuild, the “actually wait this is kinda fun now” moment. Let me try to explain what the game is now versus what everyone remembers it as.

The Launch Was A Disaster (You Already Know)

Just so we’re clear — no classes at launch, just “specialists” with names and backstories like we’re playing Valorant. Maps so big you could spawn, run for 45 seconds, and get sniped by someone you couldn’t even see. No scoreboard. In a Battlefield game. They removed the scoreboard. The series that invented the big-team shooter experience decided you didn’t need to know who was doing well. It was genuinely baffling decision-making.

The subreddit was (and honestly still is) mostly people posting clips of bugs and demanding DICE fix things. The player count cratered within the first month. My squad of four friends that I’d been playing Battlefield with since BF3 all quit within two weeks. I kept playing because I’m a masochist, apparently.

But here’s where it gets strange. Around Season 3, something clicked. They reworked the maps. Added classes back. Fixed the vehicle balance. And I realized I was… having fun? Like, genuine fun? It felt wrong after hating the game for so long, but here we are.

Specialists: Okay They’re Not That Bad Anymore

At launch, the specialist system was my most hated thing about the game. “Where’s my Assault class? Why is this dude named Falck instead of just being ‘Medic’?” I was furious. The community was furious. And honestly, the criticism was completely justified — it stripped away the instant recognition that classes gave you. In BF4, you see a guy with a defibrillator and you know what he does. In BF2042 at launch, you had to memorize ten different characters and their gadgets.

They eventually added a class system ON TOP of the specialists which sounds redundant but actually kind of works? Now you know Sundance is an Assault specialist with a wingsuit. Casper is Recon with a drone that spots people. Irish drops shields. Boris has a turret. The class overlay gives you the old clarity back while keeping the gadget variety.

I still think named heroes in Battlefield is a weird choice. It works for Apex Legends, not so much for a game where you’re supposed to feel like an anonymous soldier in a massive war. But functionally? The system works now. I’ve made peace with it. Mostly.

The Maps Went From Terrible To… Fine

Launch maps were the original sin of BF2042. Way too big, way too empty, way too much open ground where you just… ran. And ran. And then died to a vehicle you couldn’t do anything about because you were 200 meters from the nearest cover. Hourglass was the poster child for this — a massive desert map where the sandstorm mechanic was cool for about thirty seconds and then just made it impossible to see anything.

They reworked a bunch of them and honestly the difference is night and day. Kaleidoscope went from a confusing mess to a decent urban map once they added more cover and tightened the infantry lanes. Orbital’s rocket launch area got better sightlines. Manifest always worked because the shipping container layout naturally created close-quarters fights — it was basically the only good map at launch and it’s still one of the best.

The classic Bad Company 2 maps (Arica Harbor, Valparaiso) through Portal are a reminder of what Battlefield maps SHOULD be. Focused, with clear engagement zones and multiple viable routes. Every time I play them I think “why didn’t they just make maps like this from the start?” and then I remember DICE was trying to justify 128 players and massive scale.

Vehicles Still Feel Great

This is the one area where BF2042 was always solid. Tanks feel heavy and powerful. Helicopters are genuinely scary when a good pilot is flying them. Jets can dominate a match if nobody on your team bothers to switch to anti-air (which happens constantly, because it’s always the same two people who actually do anything useful).

The vehicle variety is good — main battle tanks, IFVs, attack choppers, transport choppers, jets, light vehicles. The Bolte is probably my favorite for hit-and-run harassment. Jump in, cause chaos, get out before the engineers lock on. It’s dumb fun and sometimes that’s exactly what you need.

Vehicle balance was wonky at launch — tanks were made of paper and helicopters were death machines. They’ve evened it out now. Tanks can actually survive more than two rockets. Helicopters are still dangerous but not unstoppable. It took way too long to get here but at least it’s here now.

Portal Is The Best Thing Nobody Talks About

Okay this is where I get enthusiastic. Portal is the hidden gem of BF2042 and I genuinely don’t think enough people give it credit. It’s a sandbox mode builder that pulls content from BF1942, Bad Company 2, BF3, and 2042. Want to play classic BF1942 Conquest with WWII weapons on modern servers? Portal does that. Want to mix and match — modern soldiers with WWII weapons on a BC2 map? Yeah you can do that too and it’s absolute chaos in the best way.

The logic blocks system lets you set up custom rules without coding. Weapon restrictions, vehicle limits, custom win conditions — I’ve seen community modes that are more creative than anything DICE officially built. One guy made a mode where everyone’s a sniper with bolt-action rifles and there’s one tank on the map. It’s the most tense thing I’ve played in a shooter. 128 players, all sniping, one tank causing absolute chaos. Chef’s kiss.

If you’re an old-school Battlefield fan and haven’t touched Portal, you’re missing out. Playing Valparaiso Rush with the original BC2 weapons on modern infrastructure (actually working servers, decent tick rate, no desync) is a nostalgic experience that’s worth the price of admission alone. I’ve logged probably 60% of my BF2042 hours in Portal at this point.

Hazard Zone: Cool Idea, Dead Mode

They tried to make an extraction shooter mode. In Battlefield. The game about massive 128-player wars. It’s like putting a chess puzzle in the middle of a mosh pit. The mode itself wasn’t bad mechanically — grab data drives, fight AI and other squads, extract. But Battlefield players don’t want extraction. They want big dumb fun with explosions. Hunt: Showdown and Tarkov already own that space. Hazard Zone never stood a chance of building a player base and it shows — good luck finding a match that isn’t empty.

Weapons and Gunplay

Gunplay is solid now. Wasn’t at launch — the PP-29 basically won every close-quarters fight and the damage model felt inconsistent. They’ve patched it into a reasonable state. Multiple weapons in each category are viable which is all you really want. The AK-24 and M5 are reliable assault rifles. The K30 and PP-29 (post-nerf) are good SMGs. Sniping feels rewarding when you land the shot and punishing when you miss, which is how it should be.

Attachment system is straightforward. Unlock through gameplay, equip, tweak. Nothing groundbreaking but it works. I do miss the depth of BF4’s attachment system where you could really fine-tune weapons. BF2042’s is more “pick a scope and a barrel” than “optimize every stat.” Simple is fine, but I’d love more depth in future entries.

Game Modes

Conquest at 128 players is still the main event and honestly it’s a spectacle that nothing else in gaming really matches. The scale, the chaos, the vehicles, the destruction — when a full server is actually coordinating and PTFOing, BF2042 Conquest is magical. Key word being “when.” Half the time your team is 64 people all playing as snipers on a hill nowhere near any objective and you lose 200-0 wondering why you even bother.

Breakthrough is great when both teams are pushing. Rush coming back was a highlight — the community begged for it and DICE delivered. Classic MCOM destruction, tight infantry fights, the old BC2 energy. Good mode. Squad Conquest at smaller scale is nice for a less chaotic experience.

The game modes work. The issue has never been the modes — it’s been the execution and the player base. When you find a good server with people actually playing objectives, BF2042 is a blast. When you’re in a random match with 60 snipers on your team, it’s miserable. That’s Battlefield though. Always has been.

Real Talk Score

7 out of 10. I can’t give it higher because the launch was genuinely unforgivable and DICE shouldn’t get a free pass for releasing a broken product and spending two years fixing it. You don’t get bonus points for eventually doing your job. But the game NOW, in its current state? It’s fun. Portal alone elevates it. The core Battlefield loop — combined arms warfare, massive scale, destruction — is intact and working well.

The problem is reputation. BF2042’s launch was so bad that most people will never give it a second chance. The player base is smaller than a game this size deserves. Finding matches isn’t hard yet, but I worry about longevity. If you can grab it on sale for $20-30, it’s absolutely worth it. At full price? Hard sell considering the history. But if you’re reading this and you loved old Battlefield games… try Portal. Just try it. You’ll probably stay.

Available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC.

Alright, full disclosure. I pre-ordered this. Day one.
