The action RPG genre has no shortage of adaptations from mythology, folklore, and classic literature. Most of them fail. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West proved in 2011 that striking visual aesthetics and loose source material inspiration don’t guarantee commercial success. Countless mobile games built on Journey to the West have thrived in Asian markets and gone nowhere globally. Films and television adaptations tell stories through their native media—dialogue, cinematography, performance—but none of them asked the fundamental question that Game Science eventually did: what would it feel like to be Sun Wukong?

Not to watch him. Not to hear about him. To inhabit his capabilities inside a system built around those capabilities. Wu Cheng’en’s 16th-century novel has been adapted, reimagined, and reinterpreted across four centuries in every medium imaginable—television, film, opera, comic books, manhua, anime, mobile games, even slot machines. It is one of the most adapted works in human history. And yet, until August 2024, nobody had made the obvious game: one where you actually play as the Monkey King.

Black Myth: Wukong changed that. Released by Chinese studio Game Science in August 2024, it sold millions of copies within days, broke Steam concurrent player records, and won awards. It also launched with technical issues—frame pacing problems on AMD cards, shader compilation stutters—that somehow didn’t matter to players.

What the Others Got Wrong

Go back and look at previous attempts. Enslaved: Odyssey to the West (2011) had a striking visual aesthetic and a plot loosely based on the source material, but it sold poorly. Mobile games based on Journey to the West have thrived in Asian markets but never broken through globally. Film and TV adaptations tell the story through their native media—dialogue, cinematography, performance.

None of them asked the right question. They asked “what is the Journey to the West story?” when they should have been asking “what would it feel like to be Sun Wukong?”

Not to watch him. Not to hear about him. To inhabit his capabilities inside a system built around those capabilities.

Game Science understood this. Sun Wukong has 72 transformations in the mythology. His staff changes size. His somersault cloud gives him aerial mobility. He can clone himself, become invisible, withstand attacks that would kill anyone else. Black Myth didn’t treat these as narrative flourishes—it treated them as a combat specification.

The result is a three-stance system where the staff behaves completely differently depending on your stance. Thrust stance is fast and pokes quickly. Heavy stance hits hard but slowly. Crushing stance sweeps wide and controls space. Each stance has different timing, different damage profiles, and different optimal use cases depending on what you’re fighting.

The Combat Language Nobody Teaches You

Here’s what’s interesting about the stance system: the game never explicitly explains which stance works best against which enemy type. You’re given three options and left to figure it out.

Through experimentation (and, let’s be honest, dying repeatedly), you learn that humanoid bosses and beasts generally respond well to Heavy stance. Flying enemies that move erratically punish Heavy stance because they’re rarely in range of its slow swings. Armored enemies can shrug off Thrust combo damage but get shredded by Heavy stance once you’ve opened them up with the Immobilize spell.

This isn’t a flaw in the game’s design. It’s a teaching philosophy. The player who experiments and pays attention clears bosses faster. The player who defaults to one stance against everything eventually hits a wall.

It’s reminiscent of how the best action games teach through systems rather than tutorials. You learn by doing, by failing, by adjusting. The game respects your intelligence enough to let you figure it out.

The Role of Gear (A Controversial Take)

I’m going to say something that might annoy purists of the Souls-like genre: in Black Myth: Wukong, gear matters as much as skill.

In Dark Souls or Elden Ring, player skill—dodging, positioning, reading attack patterns—is the primary survival factor. Gear helps, but it rarely makes the difference between victory and defeat against a boss.

Black Myth inverts this. If your armor rating is too low in the later chapters, Wukong gets knocked out of dodge animations by enemy attacks. Certain moves become literally unavoidable—not because your timing is wrong, but because the game decided your equipment isn’t good enough.

Equip legendary armor, and your survival rate against late-game bosses improves dramatically. The game is calibrated around the assumption that you’re investing in your equipment as seriously as you’re investing in mechanical skill.

This creates a different kind of satisfaction. Defeating a boss isn’t just a test of reflexes—it’s also the payoff for time spent farming materials and upgrading gear. The progression loop rewards both skill and preparation.

Boss Density and Pacing

Black Myth contains an extraordinary number of boss encounters across its six chapters. For context, Dark Souls 3 has a certain number of bosses across its runtime. Elden Ring, despite its massive open world, has a comparable boss count. Black Myth, which is largely linear with corridor levels and arena encounters, has boss density that’s arguably higher than both.

The pacing doesn’t let up. By the final chapter, you’re encountering bosses at regular intervals. The health scaling compounds this—late-game bosses have significantly more health than early-game ones, meaning strategies that worked in Chapter 1 won’t work in Chapter 6 without serious gear investment and mechanical refinement.

The Immobilize spell is the great equalizer here. When used on an enemy during their wind-up animation, it stops them completely, letting you land a full combo. Against later bosses, using Immobilize strategically makes fights significantly faster than trying to brute-force through without it.

The game’s difficulty is balanced around the assumption that players engage with the spell system. Those who ignore it face a harder experience, and the game doesn’t apologize for that design choice.

Technical Problems and Why They Didn’t Matter

Black Myth shipped with known technical issues. AMD GPU users reported frame pacing inconsistencies. First boss encounters triggered shader compilation stutters. There were crash reports on certain Intel CPUs.

By any reasonable standard, this should have dampened the launch reception. It didn’t. Word-of-mouth momentum carried the game past its technical friction because the core combat loop was genuinely satisfying.

There’s a lesson here about priorities in game development. Technical polish matters, absolutely. But if your core gameplay loop is compelling enough, players will tolerate rough edges. Cyberpunk 2077 also launched with technical problems, but its RPG systems felt incomplete in ways that Black Myth’s action systems didn’t. Game Science delivered a finished action game with a complete and polished core loop. The frame rate occasionally stuttered, but the combat never did.

Journey to the West has been adapted into every medium that exists. Game Science did something unprecedented: they made Sun Wukong feel like a video game character who couldn’t have existed in any other medium. The Golden staff, the cloud, the transformations—all translated into a stance-based combat system with spell-based mobility and gear progression.

That’s the real achievement. They didn’t just adapt the story of Journey to the West. They adapted what it feels like to be Sun Wukong. And clearly, millions of people wanted to find out what that feels like.
