The first time you crest the hill leading out of the Stranded Graveyard and the Lands Between unfolds in front of you—that’s the moment Elden Ring wins. Not the combat. Not the bosses. The vista. You stand at the edge of a world that stretches in every direction: misty forests to your left, golden plains to your right, a massive falling tree in the distance that defies architectural logic, and towering above it all, the Erdtree—a golden beacon that serves as both compass and promise.

FromSoftware didn’t achieve this by making the game easier. They achieved it by solving a design problem that open-world RPGs have struggled with for two decades: how do you make a massive world feel dangerous without padding it with bullet points? The answer, as it turns out, is architectural. You design the world’s difficulty into its structure, not its numbers.

The Vertical Difficulty Gate System

Standard open-world RPGs use a horizontal difficulty curve. You complete quests in roughly any order, and enemies scale to your level, or the world has a fixed level range that you progress through linearly. Elden Ring uses what can best be described as a vertical difficulty gate system. The world is designed around a suggested path—Limgrave to Stormveil to Liurnia to Altus to Mountaintops to Farum Azula or Haligtree—but the open-world structure allows players to access areas far above or below their actual level by traversing geography.

This creates a fascinating dynamic. A mid-level player can reach Caelid, a zone recommended for significantly higher levels, by taking a southern route from Limgrave that doesn’t require defeating a single boss. They’ll get there, look around, and immediately understand why the game wanted them to wait. The giant dog-things with rotting jaws don’t care that you just left the tutorial. They will end you with prejudice.

But here’s the genius part: Elden Ring doesn’t punish out-of-sequence access with instakill mechanics. It punishes it with time inefficiency. A player in Caelid can survive most encounters—barely—but each fight takes significantly longer than usual. The game teaches the player that the level recommendation is a time recommendation, not a gate. This is a fundamentally different design philosophy from games that simply lock content behind level walls or quest flags.

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve wandered into a zone that was clearly meant for a version of me that was levels higher and hours more experienced. Each time, the world didn’t stop me. It just made me work for it. That’s respect. That’s trust.

Boss Design—The Grammar of Threat

Elden Ring’s bosses are not difficult because they have high damage or high health. They are difficult because they compress multiple phases of information into encounters that last ninety seconds to three minutes. To understand how this works, you have to analyze the structural grammar of boss design.

A boss encounter in Elden Ring follows a rhythm. The opening sequence, lasting maybe twenty seconds, is the boss telegraphing one or two signature moves that establish the encounter’s rhythm. Players who panic or run immediately encounter the boss’s “punish zone”—the area directly around the boss where most sweeping attacks will catch a fleeing player. Then comes the pattern phase, where the boss cycles through a repertoire of attacks with distinct visual and audio tells. Recovery windows after each combo are your primary attack opportunity. Some bosses have transitions that reset the encounter’s rhythm. And then the close, where the boss enters either an “exhaustion” pattern with more recovery time or an “enrage” pattern with faster attacks and less recovery.

The community has strong feelings about which bosses get this formula right and which get it wrong. Margit, the Fell Omen is the reference boss—the one everyone fights first, the one whose moveset teaches you how to read FromSoftware combat. His completion rate is the highest in the game because he’s designed to be a patience test. He has a limited moveset that rewards learning and punishes panic.

Then there’s Malenia. If you’ve played Elden Ring, you know. She’s the boss that divides players into two camps: those who think she’s the greatest boss FromSoftware ever designed and those who think she’s an unfair mess. The truth is somewhere in between. Malenia has two phases, but her moveset includes Waterfowl Dance—a rapid multi-hit combo that heals Malenia on each hit. It creates a specific failure mode that kills players even after many attempts, not because they haven’t learned the rhythm, but because the attack’s hitbox geometry at close range creates situations where dodge inputs cannot generate invincibility frames quickly enough.

This is a critical design distinction. Most Souls bosses fail via “learned incompetence”—players learn a pattern and execute. Malenia fails via “geometrical impossibility”—players know what to do and the hitbox geometry still kills them. The community calls this “overtuned.” FromSoftware’s design philosophy considers it “intentional challenge compression.” Both are true simultaneously, which is why the debate about Malenia will continue.

Build Variety as Strategic Choice

Elden Ring has approximately three hundred weapons, a hundred spells, and an Ashes of War system that allows any weapon to receive any compatible ash of war. This creates a build space that is combinatorially large but statistically constrained.

Bleed builds are the obvious example. The Rivers of Blood katana with Seppuku ash of war applies Bleed quickly, and Bleed deals a percentage of max HP as flat damage. Against Margit, this means a few Bleed procs equal significant damage. The tradeoff: bleed buildup resets when you switch weapons or enter a boss fog gate, making it unreliable against bosses with phase transitions. It’s devastating until it isn’t.

Strength builds are the opposite. Slow weapons, high poise damage, reliable interrupt potential. A greatsword has considerably more poise damage than a katana, meaning heavy weapons interrupt enemy attacks more reliably. Against Malenia, this matters: her Waterfowl Dance can be interrupted with a heavy attack if you connect during the startup frames. Miss that window and you’re in the animation. Land it and you’ve just saved yourself from the most punishing attack in the game.

Intelligence builds occupy the middle ground—consistent damage, long range, but setup time that leaves you vulnerable. Comet Azur, a beam spell, deals substantial magic damage at high INT with a standard staff, enough to remove Malenia’s first phase in one cast if you land the full beam. The catch: the setup time is approximately six seconds, during which Malenia can attack freely. You’re trading safety for efficiency.

And then there’s the Ashes of War system, which is the hidden build depth that most players don’t fully explore until their second or third playthrough. Bloodhound’s Step, a dodge ash that grants extra invincibility frames, combined with a fast weapon allows players to dodge through Malenia’s Waterfowl Dance without needing precise spacing.

Shadow of the Erdtree—Testing the Formula

The Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, released in June 2024, introduced the Scadutree Fragment system—a DLC-specific progression layer that boosts player damage and defense specifically in DLC areas. You cannot carry your high-level build’s dominance into the DLC. You must collect Scadutree Fragments across the DLC map to reach baseline effectiveness. This is a metadata mechanic: the power increase from fragments is equivalent to a significant number of standard levels in the base game.

The difficulty spike from the DLC’s final boss generated significant community debate. He has two health bars, a moveset that combines Radahn’s gravity spells with Miquella’s holy attacks, and an arena that is smaller than expected. Players who entered at high Scadutree Blessing level found the encounter challenging but fair. Players who entered at lower levels reported many more attempts. The Scadutree system is, functionally, the DLC’s actual difficulty setting, and it’s implemented through collectibles rather than a menu slider.

What It Gets Wrong

The late-game areas feel rushed, not difficult. The Haligtree has beautiful environmental design but a layout that actively misleads players. The Consecrated Snowfield, which serves as a prerequisite area, is a large, empty region with minimal exploration reward. The content density per square kilometer drops noticeably after Leyndell.

Performance is inconsistent on PC. The open world maintains good framerates on modern hardware at high settings, but specific areas drop noticeably even on high-end hardware. FromSoftware’s PC optimization historically lags behind console, and Elden Ring’s open world magnifies the issue.

Multiplayer is structurally limited. Co-op summoning works reliably, but PvP invasions have connection quality that varies dramatically by region. The 2024 Nightreign demonstrated that FromSoftware can build competent multiplayer systems. Elden Ring’s netcode is showing its age by current standards.

The endings are cosmetic, not structural. Elden Ring has multiple endings, but they differ primarily in the final cutscene. The actual world state is consistent across all endings. This is a significant design choice given the game’s emphasis on player choice in other systems, and it’s one that feels like a missed opportunity.

But these flaws don’t diminish what Elden Ring accomplished. It took the Souls formula, cracked it open, and poured it across a world that respects your ability to find your own way. You can wander for hours and never see the same vista twice. You can build a character a dozen different ways and find that each one changes how you move through the world. You can die to a boss many times and still feel like the problem is your execution, not the game’s design.
